the lilac she-cat sat at the gorge, gazing into the distance. the sunne was setting, so the sky was now a mixture of pinks and reds.
"hey! hello! who're you?" a sudden call startles oleanderdance out of her reverie. she turns around and sees another feline behind her, bouncing around merrily.

"..hi. i'm oleanderdance. but what about you?" she warily asks. mama taught her to always be wary of other cats. it seemed like this one didn't have any bad intentions towards her, but you never know.
"cool name! a bit long, though. i'm azalea." she grinned, her silver fur shining in the light. she seems about oleanderdance's age, maybe younger.

feeling a bit ruffled, oleanderdance rolled her eyes. "it's because i'm a clan cat.
...although i guess it's a bit long. you can just call me ollie for short."

"sure!" azalea mewed absentmindedly. the silver molly is distracted momentarily by a butterfly. "anyway, what're you doing here all by yourself? are you lonely? do you need me to sit with you?" azalea squealed eagerly.
"oh, i'm fine, don't worry. i just came here to watch the sunset. it's my favourite spot." the lilac she-cat purrs, wistfully glancing back at the sea.

to her surprise, azalea is silent. "...can i sit with you?"
"of course!" oleanderdance mews. it would be nice to have some company. besides, it would be a while before she was needed back at softclan. "but afterwards i'll need to go home."
azalea's tail droops. "but don't worry!" oleanderdance interjected. "maybe we can meet again tomorrow. at the same place."
"yeah. i'd like that." and in that moment, oleanderdance sees a hint of loneliness in her bubbly companion's eyes, but it quickly vanishes and is replaced with joy.

i'm sorry that you're lonely. but it's okay. i'll be your friend, azalea.

"azalea, i don't think joining them is a good idea." oleanderdance meowed worriedly. they were back at the same spot they always met. ever since that day, the two had become close friends and had built a seemingly unbreakable bond.
but that might be about to change.

azalea looks down. she doesn't meet her friend's cerulean gaze.
in that moment, oleanderdance feels a great rock in her heart plummet, crushing all her hopes.
"you didn't-"

"i did." azalea mews quietly. "it's too late." she's trembling. "i'm really sorry, ollie. i've already sworn the oath. i..i thought they would be my friends. but they just want me to obey them."
"you joined aerin's followers..?"

azalea nods timidly. oleanderdance doesn't want to believe it.
"...it's alright. i'll still be here to help you, in any way i can."
and her friend smiles up at her. "thank you."

she's worried. ever since that day, azalea hasn't been acting like herself around oleanderdance.
the silver tabby seems to be more distant. they talk less and less each time they meet.
and oleanderdance knows that something inside her has changed.

azalea is rarely distracted nowadays. in the past, she'd chase butterflies and bugs and ask oleanderdance to help her catch them.
now she's mostly silent, her eyes fixated on a spot in the distance, as if she were calculating.

oleanderdance puts her paw on azalea's, but she pulls away.
hurt, the lilac molly stares at her friend in disbelief. they always do this.
and those few seconds are all it takes for azalea to strike. her right eye...there's a burning, stinging sensation in it.
why can't i see?


and all of a sudden, oleanderdance is sent tumbling down, down, down.
she tries to reach out, tries to grab a rock, but it's too slippery.
she hears a crack. everything hurts too much.

she's fallen into the gorge, hasn't she? .
did azalea push her?
then she hears the clattering of rocks, and she sees azalea. her vision is blurred, but she sees her.
she looks distraught. "i'm sorry, ollie. i'm sorry. they asked me to do this. they said i had to get rid of any outside bonds." azalea chokes, tears welling up in her green eyes.

"how...how could you?" oleanderdance spits, rage and fury giving her energy. "i trusted you. we were friends."
azalea recoils. she sobs and she's gone. oleanderdance hears her pawsteps as she runs away.
it wasn't her fault...

i'm going to die. her eye throbs.

she hears ...voices. her clanmates! she's saved.

and she is too weak to say anything, but she thinks,
i guess this is goodbye.

Prompt: He would always see her through his garden fence. Tundra's biggest regret was that he couldn't climb the fence to see her more clearly, to get her to notice him. Yet, he persisted. And he would keep persisting until she noticed him. Because where would Tundra be if he didn't keep persisting? Nowhere. So he kept trying.

The first day he saw the forest cats he was sunbathing near the birdbath. The chirping of the birds was lulling him to sleep, and he enjoyed the late spring sun shining on his fur, warming him. His Twolegs were having a conversation through the window, their calm voices helping to send him to sleep. He heard a rustling, looking up to see her, on the fence, watching the birds on the bath intently.

"Hello," he called out sleepily, raising himself to a better position to see her. She flicked her ear to acknowledge his words, but she never acknowledged him. As she made a step closer, while Tundra watched carefully, the Twolegs made a movement that caused the birds to flutter away. The cat cursed softly, her tail flicking, and she leapt away without giving Tundra even a glance.

Tundra dreamed of the forest cats nearly every night since he saw that cat on the fence. He dreamed that he was running through the forest with them, chasing birds of all different colors and bringing them back to more cats waiting in the trees. He thought about trying to find a hole in the fence to explore, though he never got very far in that endeavor. Eventually, as the snows came, he resigned himself to waiting, to see if she ever came back. And his persistence was rewarded.

The snows had just melted, and the Twolegs had just replaced the birdbath again, filling it with fresh water to attract the birds. Tundra was in his favorite spot, watching the color of the birds' feathers, though not sleeping this time. In his mind, he knew that something would happen today. He could just feel it.

She jumped on the fence so quietly, he was almost sure it was a dream. He paused, mouth open, ready to say something but not ready to scare her away again. But eventually, his excitement at seeing her again won. "Hello," he called out again, softly enough to not disturb the birds. She again acknowledged him with a flick of her ears, but gave him nothing more. Instead of giving up, Tundra persisted. "If you come on this side, my Twolegs won't see you and you could catch a bird easier." Success! She looked at him, nodding, and silently came around to catch a bird.

Tundra watched, in awe, as she caught the bird. He said nothing as she grabbed her catch, readying herself to leap the fence and head back to her home. He wasn't sure if he should try and say something, but before he could make up his mind, she spoke.

"Thank you... and, er, goodbye."

And that was it. She was gone. But in that moment, Tundra made up his mind more clearly. He was going to find a way to find the forest cats, and he was going to help them however he could. He wanted to find that cat again, to get to know her, and to have a purpose more than sunbathing and watching the birds. And eventually, Tundra's persistence would pay off.

Writing: Miles has a new-found project it seems. The other day, he approached me with a small shovel in paw and a bucket over his head as a helmet declaring "MAKE WAY! This is now an excavation site!"
So of course I had to ask just what he was doing. He eagerly told me about his new "scientific venture", and how he was going to dig up soil samples and test them for "strange and abnormal tastes". I gently reminded him not to eat dirt, and asked him why he felt this was neccessary.
Apparently, Shirl had mentioned that there was something different about the grass and soil... something "strange, unusual and new." I'm not sure what that means, but that Sprigon always seemed to have a sixth sense for these kinds of things. And if Miles was invested in this investigation, someone would need to make sure he didn't get carried away.
So this week Miles and I are going to do a little digging together. I even bought a few new "scientific" tools for us to play with. Even if nothing comes out of it, I know Miles will have a good time. He has invited some of the other yard critters to join him. So I'm about to have my hands full this week...
