Best friend and why: Strider's best friend is a desert hawk. The two met one day in an oasis while Strider was drinking water. The hawk, Navire, flew too close to him and Strider almost kicked her. But, before he did, he saw that she needed the water as much as he did so he didn't bother. Navire has never left his side since that day. She follows Strider through the desert and occasionally lands on his back. Sometimes, she even scouts ahead to find an oasis for them to drink from; and let's him know by calling out from above.
Strider returns the favor to Navire by offering rides on his back, nuzzling her, and often helping her look for rabbits or snakes to prey on. Which is pretty adorable considering Strider has a very...hostile personality towards most creatures of the desert. I just think that Navire found his soft spot: having his ears scratched.
Btw, they look adorable when drawn together. ^^

Horse's Name: Ravine (makes me think of a ravine, simple as that)
Height: 16.0hh
Gender: Mare
Rarity: Rare
Best friend and why (can be a DAM or any other animal):
A little desert owl (a burrowing owl to be more precise - they are indeed more active during the day than at night) that acts as a scout to forewarn danger, they have a mutual symbiotic relationship in that Ravine finds food sources for the owl and herself in return for the scouting. She also can protect the bird from those that might prey on it such as snakes.
Over time, what first started out as a simple convergence of interest in making their own lives easier, has developed into a close relationship with one another, kick-started by the respect they each earned towards the other's strong points.
Whilst they generally do not speak to one another, they can understand at a glance everything the other has to say, thus words are not necessarily ever needed. This skill is simply a fruit of their long years together.
