Range Trotter #STF048

Postby Bruja » Sun May 19, 2024 5:40 am

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

This Mer-Trotter has had a rough go of things lately, and isn't feeling especially trustful of humans. How do you convince them to come to your stables, instead of diving back to the sea? What sort of accommodations would you be making if they choose to follow you?

Show Name: Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
    Barn Name: Thalassa
    Gender: mare
    Height: 12.3hh
    Halter Color: matching rope!
    Prompt:

she was sick of the sea, quite frankly.

that ship had set sail ages ago (had to have been weeks at this point, no?) and sailors—let alone pirates—are not known for their charm or good manners.

the living conditions were uninspiring at best: the food stale, the water musty, and the stalls... well, cozy. and not in a good way.

it was far from pleasant, to say the least. anything was an improvement.

and honestly? purgatory so far had been much easier for thalassa to adjust to than she thought it'd be. it was spacious, warm, and there was plenty of fresh food if you knew where to find it.

though there were humans, they were scattered few and far between. not a problem, really. they were easy to evade and even easier avoid altogether. it was moreso the other horses that were the problem.

at first, they'd been curious. as one would. she'd arrived tangled in twine, drenched in sea salt, shivering and wild-eyed. heads would turn, eyes would widen, ears would prick. but then it wouldn't stop. she could hear their murmurs, their sharp inhales, their muted gasps.

      every.

      time.

it was tolerable at first, but when every horse she passed would flick their ears back in alarm and turn their backs on her, at some point she couldn't take it anymore.

so she would stay away. far away. rather than keeping to the plains or the coast, where most lingered, she headed straight for the mountains. and that was where she would stay.

food was easy enough to come by once she knew where to find it, and water was not a problem with a fresh, cold stream nearby. she had free range of the hills without running into anyone. it was perfect. nobody had to see her, stare at her, fear her. it was just her and the stony peaks.

      alone.

and that was what was best for the others, so that was the way it'd stay.

Show Name: MR Deep Sea Monster
Barn Name: Ness
Gender: Stallion
Height: 16hh
Halter Color: black/dark blue
Prompt:
Ness had only one reason to rise from the depths of the sea: to save his friends and family from the evil pirates. Turns out, he was the prince of Atlantis, ruling over countless Sea Trotters. When I found Ness, a storm was raging, the waves crashed against the cliffs and he was barely moving. The storm washed him ashore, severely hurt. For days, I tried to heal his wounds, using every remedy I knew. All this time I saw it in his eyes, they were filled with distrust and fear. I understood his urgency, time was running out for his friends who were still in the hands of those pirates. To win his trust I made a promise to help him safe his family and friends and to keep them safe no matter what it might cost. After all, they were no longer safe in their old home. Ness's recovery was slow but steady. As he slowly got better, he shared stories of his old home. A beautiful underwater kingdom full of life and happiness. The Sea Trotters were guardians of all underwater creatures. The pirates found out about their existence and captured many of them to sell them on the black market. As days turned into weeks, Ness slowly recovered. It was finally time to start our rescue mission... (The rest is a story for later times)
(I hope you get my idea, it´s super difficult for me to write whole stories in english but I couldn´t pass the chance to enter for this stunning Trotter ;-;)

Show Name: RRS A Safe Place to Land
Barn Name: Morgan
Gender: Mare, identifies as agender (they/them pronouns)
Height: 13.3 hh
Halter Color: Artist's choice
Prompt:
Morgan isn't really a trotter. They're something stranger and altogether sadder: the living embodiment, or 'genius loci', of a coral reef.

As their rather grim appearance might indicate, Morgan's home reef isn't doing well.

It hasn't been for years, actually. Rising temperatures and ocean acidification had done a number on the reef itself, bleaching much of the coral a ghastly grey-white. Trawling nets and fishing industry cast-offs had damaged even more. Invasive fish had flooded in to finish the job, decimating native populations already driven to the brink. Most disastrous of all, repeated offshore oil spills had poisoned the few reef denizens that still clung to life. Great swathes of Morgan's reef, located just off the coast of Florida, were either dead or dying by the time the reef-trotter made their presence known.

Every one of those disasters left an indelible mark on Morgan themself. Coral bleaching wiped the color from their coat, leaving it the same sickly grey as their dying reef. The more lionfish and crown-of-thorns starfish invaded their home, the more bruised-looking blue-grey splotches crept across their frame. Every time oil flooded the ocean, more clouds of toxic black sludge crept across their frame. With every new blemish on their body, Morgan's attitude towards the humans who shared their waters soured.

All of which meant Raven Ridge had their work cut out for them when they first met Morgan. They weren't just dealing with a mistreated trotter; they were dealing with the righteously pissed-off guardian of a reef on its last legs.

The first step towards reconciliation was to simply prove their goodwill. That meant staunching the reef's wounds. If they couldn't fix systemic problems like global warming and ocean acidification, well, they'd just have to fix the problems they could make a dent in.

Step one was shoreline cleanup. As Morgan's reef began to struggle, tourism tailed off, leaving fewer and fewer visitors to collect the garbage that inevitably washed up at high tide. Now great heaps of the stuff decorated the tideline, bristling mounds of plastic and rotting seaweed that stunk to high heaven. It took thirty-odd people the better part of a day to get the whole mess bagged, sorted, and sent off for recycling, but it was absolutely worth it. Morgan, watching from deeper water, begrudgingly let them into their watery abode.

Step two was... somewhat grimmer. Somewhere along the line some bright spark had released lionfish near Morgan's reef. With no natural predators to thin their numbers, the spiny menaces had promptly taken over. Entirely too many of them stalked the shallows, devouring every fish that dared cross their path.

It's perfectly legal to spear lionfish in the state of Florida, and they make for surprisingly good eating once their venomous spines are snipped off. Raven Ridge's staff got pretty darn good at cooking them over the weeks they stayed near Morgan's reef.

Step three was to start the long, arduous process of bringing native flora and fauna back to Morgan's reef. Before they'd even arrived, Raven Ridge's leadership had put feelers out in search of native species they could bring to Morgan's reef. They'd found Coral Vita, a company who 'farmed' coral. Some undisclosed amount of money later, a quite literal boatload of new coral was carefully scattered around the reef. With the new coral came captive-bred fish sourced from reputable breeders. It wasn't much, but it was something a seed of hope that could someday grow into something magnificent.

That gesture was enough to finally convince Morgan that maybe, just maybe, they could trust these humans after all.

Morgan's hide is still pale and sickly, but the reef that gave them life is slowly beginning to recover. As it recovers, so too will its guardian. For now Raven Ridge is hard at work setting up a satellite stable in Florida. If they play their cards right, Morgan will never need to leave the reef they love and nearly lost. Instead, Raven Ridge will come to them. No one's quite sure how to accommodate a spirit- 'a sheltered pool for their new mer-friend to rest in and some sort of shade structure' is as far as anyone's gotten- but hopes run high they'll figure something out.

After all, they did promise Morgan they'd heal the reef, and keeping them happy is part of that promise.
Be the nonsense you wish to see in the world.

Height: 15hh

Prompt:
O broken-hearted one, your soul has grown weary.
Have you turned to the rippling tides,
    To engulf your lonely tears?
    May the waves embrace you.
    Lull you softly to sleep.
Ease away all the hurt and pain
That you've carried through the years
But if given the chance, would you forget the past?
You and I can start all over
We can love again, my dear.

A sorrowful tune would always be heard in the depths of the ship. A broken soul, torn from his homeland. Ocean had missed the sea dearly. His capture had been tortuous on his mind and soul. He yearned for the day that he could dive into the sea and be one with it again. However, upon hearing that he was set to be sold at an auction on land, his hope dwindled.

He spent almost 2 months on the ship. So close yet so far from the sea. The captured mer-trotters he had seen was horrendous. Many like him, came in battered and injured. They would be locked in tiny stalls and when the ship docks, some would be dragged off to be sold and never to be seen again. Some would succumb to sickness or injury. Ocean had to watch many of his kind be dragged off - dead or alive. He couldn’t even fake his death as he has seen pirates shoot the trotter before tossing them off board for good measure.

The condition he was in when he was dragged off out of his stall was bad. Ocean was emaciated. His spine and ribs were showing and his hind legs were injured and infected. The net that they used to capture him was still dangling behind as he refused to let anyone near him. The rope continued to rub at his flesh, leaving behind nasty cuts and gashes.

Ocean was prepared to succumb to his injuries at the auction or be sold to yet another terrible person. He was dragged up to the platform where many were shouting numbers. His mind was fuzzy until a loud bang of a hammer brought him back to reality. He was then blindfolded and led off. He had barely any strength left. Ocean felt a tinge of pain at his neck before he felt sleepy and his mind went black.

When he came to, he realised he was in a stall. It was a big improvement compared to the dingy, damp and dirty stall he was locked up in. It was clean and warm. There was even fresh water and food available. He realised that his wounds had been cleaned and bandaged. He carefully stood up, still feeling weak. It wasn’t long before he heard footsteps. Ocean immediately moved to the back of the stall, pressing his body as far from the door as possible.

There was a human but her eyes held no hostility. She looked concerned and the slightest bit afraid and anxious. The human tried to explain to Ocean what had happened. However, he didn’t quite register what she said and started to rear and buck in the stall. Sensing that he was aggravated by her presence, she quickly left but tossed an apple into the stall before leaving.

That night, Ocean sang his sorrowful tune once more. What he didn’t know was that the human was quietly listening to him from outside the barn. Changing his bandages proved to be a challenge. Ocean was terrified of humans and didn’t like their presence. However, the human was patient. She tried to let him get used to her presence. She would start by standing a distance from the stall, slowly inching nearer while cooing and giving Ocean treats. He did calm down somewhat as she doesn’t seem to pose a threat.

By nightfall, Ocean was willing to have the human inside the stall. He started to sing his song once more. However, this time, the human would hum the melody with him. She reassured Ocean that she wasn’t going to hurt him and just needed to change his bandages to prevent infections. With much hesitance, he finally allowed her to change it.

It was nearly two weeks before Ocean’s wounds had gotten better. However, he still longed for the sea. One morning, the human came into Ocean’s barn. She opened his stall door but didn’t step in. It seemed that she was encouraging him to go out instead. After more encouragements and treats, Ocean stepped out of the barn. He realised that there were makeshift fences leading him to another barn further out, near the beach. It took a while but Ocean followed and headed to the new barn. There, he realised that the barn had been somewhat converted into a stall meant just for mer-trotters. There was a stall that had sand and hay but next to it was a specialised gap, intentionally built to lead to the sea. Ocean immediately dove in. He felt so free being back in the sea. However, he did realise that there were barricades around. He surfaced back up and glared at the human. She sighed and said that he still needed time for his wounds to heal and to get him back to a healthy weight. Regardless, it was a big improvement and he was happy to be in the sea once more.

Days turned into weeks and Ocean found himself enjoying and spending more time with his human. He had grown to trust her. He would often spend his time by her side whenever she came into the stall. One fateful night, Ocean was lying by his human’s side when she started to hum the tune of his song. He expected her to sing the song like she sometimes does but this time, the lyrics were different.

O broken hearted one, your soul is now set free...
Rise and surface from the rippling tides that engulfed your lonely tears
    May the waves embrace you,
    Wake you gently from sleep...
Overtake all the hurt and pain,
    A new sunrise has appeared
And with this second chance, shall we grow from our past?
You and I can start all over...
Learn to love again, my dear.

Ocean was overwhelmed by emotions. This human that stood by his side when he didn’t trust a soul. Her patience and dedication to caring for him. Thats when he came to a realisation. The sea was vast and limitless. However, he wouldn’t be able to have her by his side. Maybe staying with her wouldn’t be so bad after all….

Prompt:
This is not the first-time pirates have done this, captured herds of wild sea trotters and stored them in poor confined conditions until they arrive at a market to sell. These owners had heard the rumors for years and knew they wanted to help in some way. Even if it was just giving one trotter a better life after that boat. They ended up doing both- helping with the rescue and adopting one of the more... difficult individuals.

They started her in smaller enclosure just long enough to heal the worst of the superficial wounds and make sure there were no lingering physical injuries. They quickly learned this trotter was not a fan of humans after the way she had been treated. She was angry and not afraid to let the humans know. After a few days though, she seemed to realize these individuals were there to help the pain go away but as soon as the wounds were cleaned and redressed, she was kicking and huffing for them to leave the stall. The humans expected this and were happy just to be able to help start the healing process. Once everything physical looked good they were ready to move her to phase two.

They had spent so much time, energy, and resources on this part of their land. A section that very few humans or animals even got to see. They had been planning this space for a rescue for a while now. And not just a regular horse but specifically a sea trotter.
You see, on one of the far edges of the land, the property backs up into a smallish private cove. The bulk of the time and resources had been going towards finding a way to have both access to the ocean but also be a secure enclosure. The trotter has access to all the area (land and water) of the cover but cuts off just outside the reef. So it's currently cut off from the open ocean but with a gated option to open it up in the future. The cove already had reef ringing around the outside, but they also brought in marine professionals to make sure it's as healthy as possible. They were also able to work out a deal to keep the space protected for threatened species as long as they could house the sea trotters there too.

Seeing the freedom and preservation of the space is what truly began open the trotter's heart to these new humans. Maybe they weren't all greedy and destructive. These were caring for the environment and the sea creatures within, not scooping them up to sell. They took the time to not only heal her, but they also gave her her own space to recover without any expectations. They didn't buy her to show her off, breed her, or force her to perform and compete. They were leaving it up to her. She could choose to interact as much or as little as she chose.

At this point, internally she was being swayed towards like these humans. Howver, outwardly she still appeared angry and standoffish so they continued to give her space. They had one last trick up their sleeve to help this wild trotter feel more at home.

This newcomer wasn't the only sea trotter on the property.
There were actually a few. All with different stories. So far, she hadn't been sharing the cove with any other horse but she had heard whispers from the waves.
One day, while she was on land getting a drink from the freshwater stream, she heard the ocean gate briefly open and shut again. Surprised, she looked out and waited. She didn;t have to watch long. Slowly a large shape emerged from the waves. It was another sea trotter. The first she had seen since getting off the boat. It wasn't one that had been on the ship with her though.

The humans had decided it was time for her to see another of her kind so they let Deeper into the cove. It had actually been her place of preference on the property until they had closed it off for this new purpose. Deeper was their first merhorse and what lead them to love this subset of trotters. During construction she had been splitting her time between the central farm, the lake, and the rocky coast but she was excited to return to the place that felt most at home. She wasn't used to sharing though. There's no obvious reason why but Deeper doesn't seem to connect with the other trotters very well. Everyone is friendly and fond of each other, but she hasn't really found her match yet. Maybe it's too much time spent at the bottom of the ocean that gives her an alien vibe. Regardless, she loves the humans and didn't mind sharing her private cove..too much.
The humans thought introducing another trotter, one that loves the sea more than the land but also felt safe around humans could help the new horse.

And it worked. Even better than they anticipated. The humans started visiting more often and the new horse would watch as Deeper enthusiastically ran up for treats and scratches. Slowly, Uplifted began to approach as well. At first very cautious. She would come more for the treats than the pets, still not trusting those hands. But overtime, with Deeper's help, she grew more relaxed. And began to remember all the times those hands had helped to heal her, not hurt. It's been many months. No one would call Uplifted tame, but that's not what the humans wanted anyway. They just wanted her to feel safe and comfortable. She now approaches for treats and occasionally will request a brushing. What they were equally excited to see was how well Deeper and Uplifted seemed to get along. They seemed to click on another level and are always found next to each other whether sleeping or swimming.

The biggest test was opening the ocean gate. they had accepted she might swim off never to return and indeed that what they thought had happen when she first dove through the newly opened gate. however, as the sun set over the waters, a rejuvenated trotter gave swimming back to shore.
She spends most of her time in the cove but will sometime go for multi-day journeys into the open ocean. Often with Deeper in tow as they dive down to the dark depths. But they always return to the company of the humans in the safety of the cove.
